For this year’s Black History Month, David Brothers (writer at both Comics Alliance and 4th Letter) is writing an article highlighting some of Marvel’s black characters, linking their first appearances to significant moments in history. In this first part, David talks a bit about Glory Grant, Misty Knight and Storm. The second part of this article will be up on Friday. David’s also been writing posts dedicated to this year’s Black History Month every day over at 4th Letter, so be sure to check those posts as well.
I’m reposting these matches. For the first time since the tourney, we got a case of ballot stuffing. So let’s start again, people! Don’t stuff the ballots, I’m monitoring the polls closely, so play fair. You have time to vote until Tuesday 2AM GMT. (There’s still a couple of minutes for you to vote on the previous matches, if you haven’t yet!)
Match-up #3: Storm versus Mockingbird
Match-up #4: Misty Knight versus Black Widow
According to this Spin-off article, Walt Disney Co.’s CEO has confirmed that Marvel is working on live-action TV series. Though at first it was believed that they were going to develop two series, the CEO has mentioned three. This news comes amidst announcements of newly hired executives and promotions at Marvel Television, so it should be no surprise that Disney and Marvel are working on big things for their TV division.
The article also mentions that Marvel presented ABC (also property of Disney) with a list of properties that could be adapted for the screen. Some of them? Incredible Hulk, Cloak & Dagger, The Punisher, Heroes for Hire, Agents of Atlas and Daughters of the Dragon. Leaving aside Hulk and The Punisher, the possibility for the rest of the series of being adapted for TV would be most welcome. I’m not entirely sure how well would Cloak & Dagger work as a live-action show, but I think that Heroes for Hire and Daughters of the Dragon could be both a success. A TV series for Agents of Atlas could help the team gain more recognition and popularity so that they can come back in comic format. In any case, we’re sure to see big development in Marvel’s TV division and we’ll have to wait for more news.
In one corner with have the badass Misty Knight. Misty’s a former cop with a bionic arm that’s been working with her best friend, Colleen Wing, for a long while. Despite being one of the most popular POC characters from Marvel, she hasn’t been the protagonist of her own book for a while. We’ll be seeing her in Heroes for Hire soon.
In the other corner stands long-time member of the X-Men, Psylocke. Twin sister of Captain Britain, Betsy’s history is a long and convoluted one. Nevertheless, she’s a strong and important member of the mutant community. She’s currently a member of Uncanny X-Force.
It’s time to vote! Again, let me guys thank you for voting and for reblogging and for being awesome. We have two powerhouses today.
Match-up #19: Misty Knight versus Theresa “Siryn” Cassidy (Banshee II)
A former police officer that lost an arm, Misty received a bionic one from Tony Stark. Not wanting to take a desk job, she became a private investigator and founded Nightwing Restorations with her
loverfriend Colleen Wing. Currently involved in Shadowland, she will be appearing in a new Heroes for Hire series.
The daughter of the late Sean Cassidy, Theresa is a mutant with sonic powers. First introduced as a villain, she was raised by Black Tom Cassidy and wouldn’t discover that her father was Banshee until later on. Theresa’s been part of X-Force and X-Corporation, and currently she’s the co-leader of X-Factor investigations.
Match-up #20: Storm versus Elsa Bloodstone
Ororo is a mutant with the ability to perceive and manipulate the energy patterns that dictate the weather. She grew up in the streets of Cairo until Achmed El-Gibar took her in and taught her the ways of pick-pocketing and lock-picking. She would later return to Kenya, where she was worshipped as a goddess after discovering her powers. It was then that Xavier contacted her to help his X-Men. Ororo’s one of the strongest members of the team.
Elsa is the daughter of the monster hunter Ulysses Bloodstone. She grew up not knowing about her father until his death. While visiting his father’s estate, Elsa was given the Bloodgem choker, since his father intended for her to follow in his footsteps. She would become one of the most renown monter hunters. Elsa was part of Nextwave, but we haven’t seen her much around after the series ended.
