Marvel developing female led TV properties

dcwomenkickingass:

Today at SDCC Marvel announced that aka Jessica Jones is moving ahead in development at ABC and that it will include Carol Danvers and Luke Cage in the cast.

The big news was the development of Mockingbird that will place Bobbi Morse in college and follows her adventures as a student by day and secret agent by night.

KSite TV said Jeph Loeb described it as “Alias meets Felicity” and is targeted for ABC Family.

A series starring Cloak and Dagger is also in development for ABC Family.

According to Variety, Melissa Rosenberg (Twilight screenwriter) is writing and producing a show that will have Jess Jones as the protagonist. Not many details have surfaced, so we don’t know whether we’ll be seeing an Alias adaptation or something a little different. Still, a tv show featuring Jessica Jones as the protagonist is definitely something to look forward to. Hopefully, we’ll get more updates on the show soon.

Second Round: Kitty Pryde versus Jessica Jones

In one corner we have one of the most popular members of the X-Men, Kitty Pryde. Kitty is a mutant with the ability to phase through solid matter. She was once the youngest member of Xavier’s team and grew up to be a very valued and loved teammate. She recently came back after spending a long time inside a silver bullet that was meant to destroy the Earth.

In the other corner, once and future superheroine Jessica Jones! After going through the names of Jewel and Knightress, Jessica decided to retire from crimefighting, feeling that she wasn’t up to the task. She became a P.I. and worked in many difficult cases. She’s now married to Luke Cage and has a baby daughter named Dani. Featured in New Avengers, we’ll probably see Jessica going back to superheroing soon!

Winners of the last two matches! Apparently, Mayday was no match for Jessica, since she won by wide margin. Delphyne’s victory was surprising! Not because I don’t think she’s awesome, quite on the contrary, but she’s a character with less history than Patsy. I’m very happy that Delphyne won, as it shows her rising popularity. I am very fond of Patsy too, but she may be suffering from the fact that she spends most of her time in Limbo except for a mini here and there. Hopefully this changes soon.

First Round: Matches 5 & 6

It’s time for two new matches in this tournament! The first match puts a veteran against a newcomer in the Marvel U. Patsy “Hellcat” Walker versus Delphyne Gorgon

Patsy had always wanted to become a superheroine and when she finally got the chance, she didn’t think twice. Under Moondragon’s advise, she wen to Titan so recieved training in martial arts. She would later assist Dr. Strange and become one of the Defenders.

Delphyne appeared for the first time in the pages of The Incredible Hercules as one of the Amazons. She teamed-up with Amadeus Cho to defeat the current queen of the Amazons (Hyppolyta’s daughter) and was later crowned as their new queen, a position she’d hold for some time. She’s currently kicking ass alongside her Amadeus. I believe I’m not exaggerating when I say she’s one of the best new female characters.

Next up is Jessica Jones versus Spider-Girl!

Jess Jones was the star of her own series, Alias. She became a fan favorite pretty fast as a private investigator and a retired superheroine. Once a victim of emotional and physical abuse, Jessica is now married to Luke Cage and has a baby, Danielle. Though still not active as a superhero again (but still kicking ass), it’s likely that we’ll see her don her Jewel costume soon.

The daughter of Peter and Mary Jane Parker, May “Mayday” Parker continues her father’s legacy as Spider-Girl on Earth-982. In order to stop Normie Osborn, she donned Ben Reilly’s costume. She would later continue her career in crime-fighting with the support of her parents. Mayday has been basically put in limbo with Spider-Girl: The End and we do not know when we’ll see her again. May has a pretty big and loyal fanbase.

Jessica Jones’ Iconic Covers

Inspired by DC Women Kicking Ass and CSBG I decided to post some of Jessica’s iconic covers. My criteria? In this case, I chose the covers that I think represent Jessica’s history, personality and evolution as a character. In other words, covers that speak volumes about the character.

At first, I thought about choosing the cover to Alias #01, because it was Jess’ first appearance in the Marvel U. However, I think this cover says a lot more about her. For those of us who’ve read Alias, we know that her experience with the Purple Man was life-changing. Not only because of the abuse she endured during 8 months, but also because of the aftermath, which included her second encounter with him and how she was able to break free from him and kick his ass. I think this second encounter renewed her strength. (This cover was illustrated by David Mack, who illustrated most of Alias’ covers and made an amazing job.)

This is the cover to The Pulse #13 (by Mike Mayhew) and I think it speaks for itself. I think that finding out that she was pregnant and giving birth to Danielle were two moments that (alongside the moment that I just described related to the Purple Man) redefined Jessica. Not in the sense that they changed her personality or what she is in essence, but in that they gave her more reasons to keep fighting for what she believes is right.

Cover to New Avengers Annual #01 (by Olivier Coipel). A pivotal moment in both Jessica’s and Luke’s life. I think their relationship is one of the strongest in the whole Marvel U. They care for each other and they are ready to fight for each other, no matter what gets in their way.

And here’s where I cheat. Not much of an iconic cover (I’m sure it’s going to be a variant cover for a New Avengers issue, not sure which number though), but I wanted to include it because it probably marks Jessica’s return in the superhero game. We’ve already seen her kicking ass alongisde the other Avengers, but we’ve yet to see if she’s going to become an active member of the New Avengers team. Jessica’s already a BAMF, with or without tights, but I think that if she decides to actively join the team, we’re going to see just how much it means to her to be a superhero.

So these are my choices. Of course, my word is not the rule, so if you think other covers have as much meaning as these (or even more), make sure to share your opinion here!

I don’t know how I missed this. Around the time Marvel released that “I am an Avenger” picture featuring Jessica in her Jewel costume, BMB tweeted this. So, apparently, once Scarlet is over (that creator owned comic with Alex Maleev), we’ll be getting an Alias mini! Good news or good news?

The Underneath (issues #16-21) was one of the most disturbing cases. Jessica teamed up with the original Spider-Woman to try and find Mattie Franklin (the third Spider-Woman). A “boyfriend” of Mattie was exploiting her to produce the drug called Mutant Growth Hormone, which grants superpowers to normal people during a limited amout of time.
