Jennifer Smith from Fantastic Fangirls wrote an interesting article about the status of some of the oldest female characters from Marvel. (As usual) There certainly seems to be a disparity in the way Marvel treats their male and female characters.

Quarter-finals: Jean Grey versus Scarlet Witch

We’ve reached the end of the quarter-finals and tomorrow we’ll be starting with the semi-finals!

In one corner, the host of the Phoenix force and the first female member of the X-Men, one of the characters we want to see back from the dead, Jean Grey!

In the other corner, former member of the Avengers and leader of the West Coast Avengers, and yet another character we want back in the pages of an ongoing series, the Scarlet Witch!

I know everyone expected Jean to win, and she did, but Sooraya still put up a decent fight, so props to her too!

Second Round: Jean Grey versus Dust

We’re very close to reaching the end of the second round and then we’ll get to the Sweet 16!

In one corner we have the legendary host of the Phoenix Force, Jean Grey! Jean’s a founding member of the X-Men and for a long while she was the only female teammate. An omega level mutant, Jean controls vast and potentially limitless psionic power. One of the most popular Marvel women, we’ve yet to see when she’ll come back.

In the other corner we have one of the most powerful young X-Men, Dust! Sooraya’s from Afghanistan and is one of the very few prominent Muslim characters in comics. She can transform into a cloud of dust or sand and in this form she can propel herself through the air at great speed. Almost always seen with the rest of the X-Kids, Sooraya pops up here and there in the X-Books.

You have time to vote until Thursday 2AM GMT!

Congrats to the winners from the previous match-ups! Mocky won by a wide margin and Valkyrie put up a fight at the beginning, but as expected Jean got a lot more of votes. Nevertheless, it’s always nice to see that the more underrated characters still received a nice amount of votes.

Have you voted for Jean yet? You might piss her off otherwise.

First Round: Matches 15 & 16

I’m back to my usual schedule :D I’ll be posting the winners of matches 13 & 14 later today, but I wanted to thank you for all the votes! Today we have four very interesting competitors, one a truly powerhouse.

Match-up 15: Jean “Phoenix” Grey versus Valkyrie!

A founding member of the X-Men, Jean is an omega-level mutant, possessing telekinetic and telephatic powers. Once Marvel Girl, later Jean would become a recurring host for the Phoenix Force, granting her an incredible amount of power. Jean is currently believed to be dead, but there’s always been talk at Marvel about her possible return in the future.

One of the few female Asgardians to enter training alongside Thor and others, Brunnhilde would become one of the strongest warriors. After completing her training, Odin appointed her leader of the Valkyrior, tasked to look for worthy warriors in the battlefields and grant them entrance to Valhalla. She would maintain this position for centuries. She is now part of the Secret Avengers.

Vote!

Match-up 16: Barbara “Mockingbird” Morse versus Dead Girl!

A biology professor, Bobbi Morse was once one of the most effective agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., excelling in gymnastics and arts of espionage. She would later become Mockingbird and a founding member of the West Coast Avengers. Bobbi was believed to be dead, but she returned during Secret Invasion as one of the heroes that had been abducted by the Skrulls. She is currently the star of Hawkeye & Mockingbird (recommended) and can also be seen in the pages of New Avengers.

Moonbeam (surname unknown) moved to New York to purse a career in acting, but after moving in with her lover, she was murdered by him. The murderer sealed her body in a mausoleum. At this time, her mutation activated and brought her back to life. Still trapped in the mausoleum, Dead Girl discovered that she could communicate with the dead. She would become a member of X-Statix.
